Let Loadshedding Woes Be A Thing Of The Past

By now, every South African is familiar with the concept of loadshedding. And, if you are new to the Motherland, loadshedding is basically scheduled power cuts that we experience as a country in an effort to help our electricity provider stay operational across the country. The one thing we all agree on as South Africans is the lack of preparation when it comes to scheduled loadshedding. We have been running around looking for alternatives to ensure we stay ‘on’ during this time, but with lots of articles and videos telling you what to get, it can be a little confusing. Well, worry not; OneDayOnly is here to give you a quick rundown of what to get for your home to ensure loadshedding is a thing of the past.

Stay Prepared

Luckily for most, if not all, South Africans, the EskomSePush (ESP) app has been hard at work, providing us with the necessary information regarding when our scheduled power outages are, making it easy for a lot of us to prepare and stay ready. Here are some tips for prepping for loadshedding:

  1. Charge all your devices: From phones to laptops to lights, anything that needs to be charged must always be charged before an outage. You don’t want to have complete darkness once loadshedding hits.
  2. Have enough food and snacks that won’t need heating: This will help you a great deal. We all know the stress of trying to cook as soon as the ESP notification says you have 55 minutes left till the next outage, so invest in fruits and vegetables, as well as other snacks that will sustain you for the duration of the power cuts.
  3. Keep your torch handy: In case your loadshedding is scheduled for nighttime, you want to be ready with a torch.

Go Solar

You’ve probably heard a few people claiming their homes, places of work, and places of entertainment have gotten into the solar-powered devices trend. Not just a trend but a surefire way to help keep your devices running even during loadshedding. From outdoor solar lights to inverters, ensure you prep your home with the right and relevant advancements that will help you stay on. The sun is an incredible natural resource that we don’t take enough advantage of in South Africa. One of the first things you can do to prepare your home for load shedding is to install a solar geyser. If the geyser seems like an expensive buy, try starting small with lights and other small devices.

Gas It Up

As an alternative, gas has always been considered by most South Africans, especially those who camp a lot. So, maybe it is time your home got a gas stove, heater, and more in an effort to minimise the stress and costs that loadshedding leaves us with. You can still use a gas stove when the power goes out, meaning you won’t starve or need to resort to eating cold food for supper. Bonus – get yourself a stovetop kettle so you can still indulge in your favourite tea and coffee.
