Wine O'Clock: Choosing The Perfect Bottle To Gift Someone Special

When it comes to expressing warmth, celebration, or appreciation, few gifts are as timeless, versatile, and well-received as a bottle of wine. There's a certain magic about gifting a bottle of wine to someone special, especially if it's a new varietal they haven't yet tried, but you know they’ll love.

Whether it's for a birthday, a romantic anniversary, or a simple gesture of gratitude, a well-chosen bottle of wine can elevate any occasion and show your someone special just how much they mean to you. But with the world of wine being so diverse and vast, how do you go about selecting the perfect bottle to gift someone special? Fear not, because in this blog, we'll walk you through the art of choosing a wine that will delight your favourite and have them questioning whether they should savour or save it.

The first sip, we mean step

Once you’ve decided to buy your favourite person a bottle of wine, the first thing to consider is their preferences. Are they a red, white, or Rosé drinker? Do they like their wines sweet, dry, or wooded? Knowing what they like is the first step in ensuring you get them a bottle they will truly appreciate and remember.

Now, let’s talk wine

Once you know what type of wine your someone special leans towards, it’s time to delve into your options.

Red, red wine

If they’re a red wine drinker who tends to lean towards the bold, heavier types, then a Pinotage or Cabernet Sauvignon are both winners. But if they like their lighter, fruitier red, then a Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, or Cinsault would suit their taste better. If they’re in the middle, we’d recommend a red blend to meet their preferences.

White wine

White varietals are known for their refreshing and crisp character, and with few varietals to choose from, let’s dive right in. Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs are always a winner as they offer an easy drinking and flavourful experience that can change quite drastically depending on the wine-making methods. It’s important to find out whether your someone special likes their wines wooded, especially when buying white, as this gives it quite a distinct characteristic that you either love or hate.

Sauvignon Blanc is also a big favourite amongst white wine drinkers and is usually the safe buy as it delivers a consistent taste that is always received well.

Rosé all day

Rosé wines are the epitome of vibrancy and lightness and our go-to if you’re unsure what type of wine to get your favourite wine drinker. They're a fantastic choice for celebratory occasions, especially if they’re outside, and always go down a treat! They are easy drinking, giving off fruity notes that can be enjoyed alone or with food.

Champagne and Sparkling Wines

For truly special moments, consider gifting a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine. Non-alcoholic champagne also makes a great gift for those who either don’t drink or have stopped for the time being, as they are still a great-tasting treat that’ll add a touch of sophistication to any occasion.
